Reading for a Lifetime

Our 4th annual Newburyport Literary Festival, Reading for a Lifetime, will be held April 24-25, 2009 in venues throughout Newburyport's historic downtown. And who better to exemplify this sentiment than our honorees for 2009:
Dottie LaFrance, head librarian for the Newburyport Public Library for the past 30 years and Newburyport native and children's author, David McPhail. Each of these individuals has contributed enormously to the reading community. Indeed, they have encouraged people of all ages to connect with books and reading—reading as a way of learning new information and experiencing new ideas. Join us as we honor Dottie, David, and reading for a lifetime.

Party with the Authors!
Please join us for dinner with the festival authors on Friday April 24th.

About Dorothy LaFrance

Dorothy LaFranceDorothy LaFrance recently retired from the Newburyport Public Library after serving as Head Librarian for 30 years.

“The Literary Festival is an acknowledgment of the power of books and reading. This years’ theme, Reading for a Lifetime continues Newburyport’s annual formal festivities. During my 32-year career as a librarian I have observed a celebration of reading on a daily basis that spans a generation. There is nothing more rewarding than to witness a toddler’s first trip to the library, followed by giving that child his first library card, assisting that student as a teen seeking out information about colleges and then seeing the return of that grown-up toddler with a family of his own. For a librarian, the ability to place the right book in the hand of the right person at the right time is the ultimate reason to celebrate. As an institution, the public library has the capacity to inform, empower and inspire readers of all ages for a lifetime.”
