How to Transform History and Your Family’s Origin Story Into a Compelling Narrative That Catches Readers’ Imaginations

As memoirists and novelists, what do we do when we have a family story to tell but weren’t around when it happened? What if that story is a thread in a larger history? And what if there are gaps and discrepancies between history and the versions our families have told us or kept secret?

In this session you will learn how to construct vivid scenes from archival material such as old film footage, letters, photographs, and diaries. You will also learn how to insert fictionalized moments into scenes to address the ‘gaps’ without compromising history, and the difference between yourself as a character versus the wise narrator who helps readers link past and present. We will look at examples from authors like Laura Hillenbrand, Alex Marzano Lesnevich, Jesmyn Ward, Rebecca Skloot and Kevin Birmingham.
