In this online poetry workshop, we’ll examine how—and why—metaphor can jumpstart the creative
process, expand a poem’s meaning, and create uniquely personal connections with readers.
Together, we’ll review and discuss examples where metaphor works in concert with key poetic
elements (sound, diction, form) to create moments of genuine surprise and delight. Taking our
inspiration from these examples, we’ll use this opportunity to generate new metaphors of our
own to motivate our writing moving forward. Remember, no matter what T.S. Eliot wrote, April
need not be “the cruellest month” when you read and write in community. Come celebrate
National Poetry Month with us!
